Many campsites call themselves 'green'. What does a label really tell you? Here is what we found at official sources.

  • Slovenia Green is Slovenia's national sustainability programme (Green Scheme of Slovenian Tourism). Destinations are assessed against the 84 criteria of the Green Destinations Standard and receive bronze, silver, gold or platinum. Source: slovenia.info, slovenia-green.si
  • For accommodation, including campsites, the label is not simply handed out: the provider must first hold an internationally recognised sustainability certificate accepted by the programme, such as Ecocamping, EU Ecolabel, Green Key or Travelife. Source: slovenia.info
  • What it means for you: the provider has had sustainability measures checked through such a certificate. It says nothing about comfort, quiet or price (our interpretation). Source: slovenia.info
  • Outside Slovenia: the European Commission has a searchable catalogue of accommodation with the EU Ecolabel; it includes campsites. Source: green-forum.ec.europa.eu
