From our own experience: roof box

We have driven both with and without a roof box several times. With a roof box the car handles differently and you drive more slowly. The ANWB advises:

  • With roof box never faster than 130 km/h and not faster than the top speed recommended by the box manufacturer. No abrupt steering movements at high speed.
  • Stay under the maximum roof load from the owner’s manual: roof load minus roof racks minus luggage. Also note the maximum load of the box.
  • Mount the box centrally and make sure that the tailgate still opens.
  • According to ADAC, a full roof box uses about 2 litres more fuel per 100 km at 130 km/h. So take it off after the holiday.

Extra for the mountains (Tatra, Carpathians, Julian Alps)

If you hike higher up, you will notice that the weather changes faster there than in the valley. What we pack in addition:

  • A warm layer and a rain jacket, also in July
  • Sturdy shoes with good grip
  • Enough water and something to eat
  • A charged mobile phone with an offline map and the emergency number 112
  • Tick tweezers
