A hike to a mountain lake sounds wonderful, but with children you want to know what you are getting into beforehand. Here’s what you should know before you go to Morskie Oko with the family.
In short: to Morskie Oko you walk about 8 kilometres uphill on an asphalt road. The Tatra National Park counts around 2.5 hours per direction and at least 7 hours for the whole excursion. Buy your parking ticket online in advance and be there before 8 a.m. if possible.

Morskie Oko is the lake you see in almost every photo of the Polish Tatras. You can’t get there by car: From the car park you go uphill on a paved road. It is not difficult, but it is a long way. With children of 7 and 9 you are on the road for a whole day, and with some planning it will be a nice day instead of a long one.
The hike: how far and how long?

The trail starts at Palenica Białczańska. From there it’s about 8 kilometres uphill on tarmac. The park recommends allowing at least 7 hours: 2.5 hours up, 2.5 hours back and about 2 hours for a break at the mountain hut or a walk around the lake. With the drive, it takes the whole day. For children who are used to hiking, it is quite feasible: the road is wide and paved, it is above all long and rises evenly. For children who get tired quickly, it becomes exhausting (our assessment). Take enough food and drink with you. There are no bins along the way, so you take everything you bring back down with you. Shortcut: e-bus or horse-drawn cart
- E-bus: the park is trialling electric buses between Palenica Białczańska and Włosienica and between Zakopane and Włosienica. The park entrance ticket is included in the price, and children up to 4 ride free. Timetables and prices are on the park’s website. The buses are suspended in winter. - Pferdewagen: until 31 August 2026, the horse-drawn carts ran from Palenica Białczańska to Włosienica, about 6.9 kilometres. Since 1 September 2026 the park has been trialling a shorter route to the Wodogrzmoty Mickiewicza waterfalls, about 2.9 kilometres. Going uphill, a cart takes no more than 10 adults. The arrangements for summer 2027 have not been announced. The park is overhauling its transport step by step and has ordered 16 more electric buses. Source: TPN: Horse carriages and e-buses Check the park’s website shortly before your trip.
Parking: buy an e-ticket in advance

The park’s official car park has three sections: at Palenica Białczańska (at the start of the trail), along the road up to 1 kilometre away, and at Łysa Polana, about 1.5 kilometres further on. From Łysa Polana it’s a 15 to 20-minute walk to the start of the trail. You can’t choose a spot: the earlier you arrive, the closer you park. Source: TPN: Morskie Oko in a nutshell

Save the ticket on mobile or print it out: reception is not always there. The park recommends arriving before 8 am; otherwise you will be stuck in a queue with cars without a ticket. Watch out for fake tickets. Some websites sell parking tickets “for Morskie Oko” for car parks that don’t belong to the park. Park staff wear orange vests with a logo, sell tickets only at the barriers at Palenica Białczańska and Łysa Polana, and accept cards only, no cash. Source: TPN: Morskie Oko in a nutshell

You buy your ticket online on the park’s website, at the entrance or via the QR code at the entrances.
