Dossier Nature & mountains on a budget
Mountains, forests and sandstone rocks do not have to cost the price of the Alps. In this dossier, we put together four natural areas in Eastern Europe that you can reach by car from Utrecht: how far it is, what fuel and vignettes cost approximately, what admission officially costs and what a week of accommodation costs in a fixed summer week. What we could not measure is in the orange box, so you know where to look yourself.

💡 What we deliberately left out
These figures are deliberately missing. We do not estimate them.
- Holiday homes (Booking.com filter “Holiday homes”): for 10–17 Jul 2027, Booking.com reported only 4 (Špindlerův Mlýn), 0 (Hřensko), 20 (High Tatras) and 15 (Bled) homes in the areas themselves; the rest of the list was outside them. Not enough for a fair median.
- Accommodation Bohemian Switzerland: Booking.com reported 14 accommodations in Hřensko, the list mainly contained places outside. No median.
- Entrance to Krkonoše and High Tatras: no official entrance fee found for the National Park; parking fees differ per municipality and are not included.
- High Tatras: Polish e-TOLL on the route not included.
Good to know
- High Tatras: the high-altitude hiking trails are closed every year from 1 November to 31 May (seasonal closure by the TANAP National Park). In the summer week of this measurement they are open.
- Pravčická brána: the Gabriel Trail from Mezní Louka has been closed since the 2022 fire; you walk from Hřensko (about an hour). Cash only.
- Vintgar Gorge: open from April to October; it is best to buy your ticket online in advance for a fixed time slot.
Wild camping in the north?

Is 8 to 14 hours’ drive to these mountains too much for a weekend? The Belgian Ardennes are about 3.5 hours from Utrecht.
